League bowling is go!
We have come to the end of another season of league bowling, and what a season it’s been! Following our open days from March onwards, it soon became clear that enough people wanted to bowl in league matches, so we added four more teams to the roster, totalling 13, with matches taking place every day of the week except Monday. Thank you to all bowlers (old and new!), captains, and secretary Ellen Aindow, for making this all run smoothly – with so many of our opponents forced to double up a player when they were short, or even concede entire games, we can be proud to say that, with our strong membership, we were never in that position across any of our matches.
We’ve included the final league standings below.
Weekday teams
The Tuesday Ladies team did exceptionally well, taking second place in their first season, and likely to be promoted; Ellen Aindow, Amy Dandy and Charlotte Richards achieved 1st, 2nd and 5th place respectively in the division averages.
The Tuesday A team of Over 60s are likely to just miss out on promotion given that they finished 3rd – the 2nd and 3rd place was decided on final shot differences as they were tied on points. In their first season and largely made up of new bowlers, the Tuesday B team finished very well mid table, winning six of their 20 games.
Wednesday teams came 9th and 11th in their separate divisions of 12 teams, facing some challenging teams and, in the case of the B team, greens we had never played before as a club, such as Phoenix Mill and The Stile.
On Thursdays, the A team won 6 matches, but this looks unlikely to be enough to hold their top division place; as new blood comes into the team and develops, we’re sure they’ll be back stronger next year. The Thursday B is typically a home for developing new bowlers and, as such, were satisfied with 6th place, achieved through four wins and a draw.
The Friday Over 60s A team did well to hold a mid-table position, with nine wins and nine losses, while the B team of new bowlers won six matches in the hotly contested bottom table.
Weekend Teams
Saturdays were always busy. The lunchtime team showed determination and resilience as they faced challenges from strong clubs such as Triplex, The George and Kings Heath Park, but nonetheless managed to rise above Queslett to take 9th position. The Saturday Warwick and Worcester league A team were very unfortunate in the close final results of their Division 3 table, and will likely be appearing in Division 4 next year. There was a more positive promotion outcome for the B team though, coming second only to WCWMC, achieved through some strong wins home and away this year. Special mention goes to Roy Phillips, coming third in the division averages, and unbeaten in his 13 games.
Finally, the Sunday team managed a final push in their last two games to take 6th place over local rivals Romsley, which should be enough to save them from relegation to Division 3.
Overall, a mixed bag of results as we become accustomed to our ever-developing club – we look forward to more league bowling (and potentially putting in even more teams) next year.
